6. Now, Tell Me What You Want, What You REALLY, REALLY want!

Updated: Apr 15, 2023

Tools needed: A highlighter, pencil, notebook paper or FABSHEET-WANT

Ok, so you have the left and right side of your worksheet or notebook paper filled out completely. You may have needed more than one page, and that's fine because we don't want to miss a thing here.

Now, let's focus on the left side again for this exercise. As you look at everything on that left side, I want you to go through it, and using a pencil, put a star next to 10 things that are a bigger priority than the others. A pencil is better than a pen for

this because you will probably change your mind a few times. That's ok. It's also ok if you think of new things to add to the list. Add them. But keep in mind, you're still going to want to end up with only 10 things starred.

After you've settled on the top ten, now we're going to narrow it down even more. It's not to say you have to abandon any of the unchosen items on the list, we're just going to focus on a few so your chances of accomplishing your want list are much greater.

As a side note here, did you know a big reason we don't get the things we want in life is that we want too many things. Or we want things circumstantially, like when you're watching the Olympics and you decide to take skiing lessons. That is...until the snow melts and then it's off to the next thing. By disciplining ourselves to narrow down the list of what we really want, we end up getting what we ultimately want, and many times, some of those less important wants come along for the ride anyway.

Now, take that list of 10 things and get out your highlighter. Pick 5 of those 10 that are at the top of your priority list. This may take a while and that's ok. Try to think through your choices as thoroughly as possible. You might even discover that two of the items on your list are similar so both aren't needed. That will help you narrow it down. Another thing you might watch out for are two 'wants' that cancel each other out. If you want to be in a warm climate, and also live by your kids, but your kids are live in a cold climate, that's going to take a little more effort, but well save that for a later time.

Once you have your Top 5 Wants, download this new worksheet called FABSHEET-WHY and transfer the 5 highlighted wants to spots one through 5. (If you're not using the FABSHEET, just take a clean sheet of paper for this exercise). When you've finished writing down your top 5 wants, then set the FABSHEET-WHY aside for the moment and go back to the first worksheet. This time we're going to work on the right side.
